Unveiling Rome's Hidden Gems: Discovering Monti

The hidden Ivy-Lined streets of Monti

When most people think of Rome, their minds wander to the grand Colosseum, the awe-inspiring Vatican, or perhaps the romance of the Trevi Fountain. But for the discerning traveler who’s already ticked the usual suspects off their list, there’s a secret waiting to be uncovered – Monti. Nestled between the tourist-heavy Colosseum and the bustling Termini station, Monti is Rome’s best-kept secret, a treasure trove of cobblestone streets, ancient churches, and hidden gems just waiting to be discovered. If you’re after a slice of authentic Roman life with a dash of luxury, Monti is where you want to be.

The Neighborhood: Where History Meets Hip

Monti might be the oldest district in Rome, but don’t let its age fool you – this neighborhood is buzzing with life. Located just a stone’s throw away from the Colosseum and Roman Forum, Monti offers a unique blend of history and contemporary cool. Picture this: centuries-old buildings draped in ivy, artfully distressed facades, and vintage Fiat 500s parked haphazardly on narrow, winding streets. It’s the kind of place where you’ll want to lose yourself, and if you do, don’t worry – every corner in Monti holds a delightful surprise.

Monti will make you feel like a local. The heart of the Monti neighborhood is the 16th-century fountain in the Piazza della Madonna dei Monti. There are bars open from first light until late where you can have a quick shot of espresso or linger over a negroni. Sit on the steps of the fountain with a book or a beer and watch the show that includes kids playing soccer, tourists consulting their maps or music school students debating.

Shopping & Eating in Monti: Where to Splurge

Michelle's Favorite Shop, LOL Roma

Monti is a shopper’s paradise, but not in the way you might expect. Forget the big-name brands and cookie-cutter luxury – this is where Rome’s fashion-forward come to find one-of-a-kind pieces and bespoke creations. There is a delightful mixture of vintage clothing stores, chic independent shops, cafes, and ateliers (can I use French in Italy?)

Best Clothing : Vintage, custom, and new clothes (most are linked)

  • Le Gallinelle, LOLRoma (Michelle’s favorite), Suede, Blue Goose, Moll Flanders

    • Pro Tip: If you go to La Gallinelle, an incredible custom clothing shop, visit your first day in Rome. If you are lucky, your garment will be finished before you fly home!

Best Gelato: Fatamorgana, Gelateria Glauco

Now, no trip to Rome would be complete without indulging in some gelato, and in Monti, the place to go is Fatamorgana. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill gelato shop. Here, you’ll find flavors that push the boundaries of tradition – think basil and walnut, or pear and Gorgonzola. But don’t worry, they also serve the classics if you’re more of a vanilla-and-chocolate kind of traveler. Either way, it’s a scoop (or two) of heaven.

Most Unique Restaurant: Ai Tre Scalini

When it comes to dining, Monti doesn’t disappoint, but if you’re looking for a place that combines local charm with an unforgettable experience, Ai Tre Scalini is the spot. This rustic wine bar has been around since 1895, and stepping inside feels like you’ve uncovered a true Roman secret. The walls are lined with dusty bottles, the tables are cozy, and the food? Sublime. The menu is a mix of traditional Roman dishes with a contemporary twist, and the wine list is a sommelier’s dream.

Dine Like a Local: La Taverna dei Fori Imperiali

How do I know? Because my Roman friend Andrea took me there, and you don’t get much more Roman than Andrea, a 5th generation hotelier and owner of Villa Spalletti Trivelli. Every year I meet Andrea for lunch, and my only requirement, I don’t want to see tourists. This year he treated me to lunch at La Taverna Dei Fiori Imperiali. The BEST lemon pasta I have ever had in my life. Trust me, just eat it.
